  1. If you come home from a business trip to find that your wife and her sister have completely cleaned the kitchen and dining room from top to bottom (okay, the floors weren’t mopped yet), gotten rid of a lot of crappy old junk that was just sitting around getting dusty, reorganized the food storage in the kitchen, took down the disgusting fence, fake ivy, etc. that was on the walls, and even washed the dining room walls (yeah, didn’t get time to wash the kitchen walls), do NOT walk in and say, “I told you to throw that table out!” DO say, “Wow! Nice job! I can tell you worked hard. Thank you.” Then give her a hug and a kiss.
  2. If you and your sister spend 3 or 4 days completely cleaning the kitchen and dining room from top to bottom (even if you didn’t get the floors mopped yet), getting rid of a lot of crappy old junk that was just sitting around getting dusty, reorganizing the food storage in the kitchen, taking down the disgusting fence, fake ivy, etc., that was on the walls, and washing the dining room walls (even if you don’t have time to wash the kitchen walls), do NOT expect your husband to come home from a business trip and be immediately happy with all your hard work. Keep your expectations low.

Okay, so he *finally* decided he liked what we did. He’s always grumpy the day he gets home, and I know that. I was just hoping that seeing the results of our hard work would help allay the grumpiness. It did not.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, I still hate housework. I like decorating, and think I’m pretty good at it. And I’m learning more and more about how to clean, and I can do it. But I’d really rather be:

  • reading
  • writing
  • playing the piano
  • playing with my dogs
  • going to a movie
  • hanging with my friends
  • kissing my husband
  • hearing chalk squeak on a chalkboard
  • taking a final exam in an astronomy class when the professor is an honest-to-goodness rocket scientist
  • sitting through a Will Ferrell-Adam Sandler-Rob Schneider movie marathon.

That is all.
