Where were you when?

1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (22/11/1963)

I was alive and kicking. My mother, that is. I was born 16 days later.

2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (18/5/1980)
I was a junior in high school, and thought it was wild. Somehow the thought of active volcanos in the U.S. startled me.

3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (28/1/1986)
I was working at UT. I saw it happen on TV, and it just boggled my mind.

4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (7/10/1989)
I was living in Salt Lake City, IIRC.

5. When the Berlin Wall fell (7/11/1989) 

Still living in Salt Lake City. It was before I started dating Joe, and had no idea that the wall coming down would ever have any direct impact on my life. But when the wall did come down, one of his relatives was able to get a letter out from East Berlin to one of Joe’s aunts in Buffalo. We have a copy of that letter in the original Russianized Polish and Auntie Virginia’s translation.

6. When the Gulf War began (16/1/1991)
In Utah wishing Joe would get his tuchus back out there. I hated being apart from him (he was living in Buena Park, California).

7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (17/6/1994)

Joe and I were living in our first apartment in North Richland Hills. He was out playing miniature golf with a friend, and I was at home. Both of us watched it on TV. Joe was devastated to think that Simpson could have done such a thing, as Joe was then a diehard Buffalo Bills fan. He and I both firmly believe, however, that Simpson is 100% guilty of those murders.

8. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (19/4/1995)
I was working at GTE, and went down to get something from the cafeteria. When I walked in, I saw little knots of people crowded in front of the televisions, and went to see what was up. It was so horrifying to imagine someone capable of doing such a heinous action. 

9. When Princess Di was killed (31/8/1997)

Joe and I were living in our second apartment in North Richland Hills. A co-worker of mine who lived up near Denton was going to church for the first time, and had asked us to go with her. So we heard in on the news while we were getting ready to go. I thought it was a terrible pity that she had such an unhappy life, and died so violently. I also thought that it was sad that Mother Teresa died the same day (or was it the day after), and the news of her death was completely eclipsed by Princess Diana’s.

10. When Bush was first announced President (7/11/2000)
I don’t recall. I do remember waiting up on election evening, because usually one had a result before going to bed. The days and days afterward were completely frustrating.

11. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (28/2/2001)
I don’t remember this one, but I was working a still-new job and actively involved in learning what I had to do.

12. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (11/9/2001) 
I was at work. I remember the students coming into the office and asking if we’d heard what had happened. I hadn’t, and immediately turned on the radio and started trying to catch the news. Everything was pandemonium. Joe sent me home from work in an overreaction of concern, and I sat at home and watched the news for hours until I couldn’t cope anymore, at which point I turned it off and read The Railway Children and went to sleep.

13. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (1/2/2003)
I was in bed, sound asleep. Joe and I both woke up to hear a loud booming noise. Obviously at the time we didn’t know what it was, but we turned on the news and quickly found out.
